Palm Springs: Using Amtrak From Los Angeles Via Fullerton
Ride 1: Amtrak train from LA-Union Station to Fullerton. Ride 2: Fullerton to Palm Springs.
On a recent visit to my mom, I discovered the best public transportation option to the Coachella Valley. Yes, there are several options to choose from for travel between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. But as a transit user, you're going to want to leave from the center of LA and arrive at the center of PS, and as far as I'm aware, only Amtrak offers that kind of transportation service.

As of 2012, it's only $18 per way. Total travel time is approximately 3 hours, including the layover.
Fullerton Station. The Amtrak train (right) connects with the bus (left) bound for Palm Springs.
At LA-Union Station, take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner line south to Fullerton (the next stop). Then from Fullerton, you board the Amtrak Thruway Bus on the other side of the station. The Thruway stops at a couple of locations in the city of Palm Springs, then goes on to other desert cities in the Coachella Vallley.

The Amtrak Thruway has stations in downtown (Spa Resort Casino) and also at Palm Springs Airport. From any hotel in the downtown area, you can get information on how to get to the Aerial Tramway.
